There are plenty of fun things to do in Sacramento and this article will highlight some of the most memorable ones. Sacramento is the capital city of California, and it was founded in 1854. It has beautiful, outdoorsy weather, almost year-round.

Below are some of the fun things that you can do while visiting Sacramento, Ca.


1. Visit The McKinley Park Rose Garden

This garden has such beautiful ambience and well cultivated flowers. It offers soothing paths to stroll through, while observing the blossoming roses.

It looks stunning year-round; they really do a good job of maintaining the flowers and lawns.

This garden plays host to various ceremonies, from weddings to birthday parties, with simple and easy décor to blend with the garden’s natural beauty.

The McKinley Park Rose Garden is the largest of its kind in Sacramento, it has about twelve hundred (1200) well pruned rose bushes.

Answer: The roses at McKinley Park Rose Garden are in full bloom between April – November.

2.) California State Railroad Museum

The California State Railroad Museum showcases in a historical context, the growth of railroad and associated infrastructure in California from its early days to the 1900s.

It has as part of its extensive collection, locomotives and rail cars from about 1862 to 1944.

While visiting this museum, there are various activities that you can take part in. Have you ever wanted to board a train that is pulled by a steam or diesel locomotive?

Here is your chance to do that, while enjoying a scenic view along the Sacramento River in this 50-minute round trip.

For this ride, you have the option of purchasing a ticket for the coach class or the first class. No matter where you seat, it promises a memorable experience.

Guided tours are also available. To participate in one, make sure to talk to the front desk upon arrival. They are led by docents, and it will cover in about 30 minutes, the building of the transcontinental railroad.

3.) Tour of The Breweries

There are more than a few craft beer breweries in Sacramento and if you are like me, a visit to one or more of them is always in the bucket list.

Depending on which of them you visit, you could be offered free tasting and tours.

Some of the breweries are known for extensive beer menu and of course, grilled or fried goods to go with the beers. In some, you can be allowed to create a brew of your own, using custom recipes.

Answer: There are more than 60 breweries, both the very old and the relatively new. The cool thing about them is that many of their ingredients are sourced locally.


4.) Visit The State Historic Park – Sutter’s Fort

Sutter’s Fort is another memorable place to visit in America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital.

The fort is historically significant and exists to remind us of the interactions between early European settlers and the Natives.

At some point in its early history, gold was discovered, and this led to a predictable gold rush, in line with the happenings of that era.

The Fort is in the area around Sacramento’s Midtown and is originally homeland to the Nisenan people. Some of the buildings in Sutter’s Fort have been upgraded but the middle building is still original.

Location: The park is in Sacramento Midtown, around the 26th and 28th streets and also between the K and L streets.

Question: Are photographs allowed?
Answer: You can take photographs in the Fort and its surrounding park for personal use. Commercial photography will require prior permitting.

Answer: Yes, it is free for children but $5 for adults and for those between 6-17 years old, it is $3.

5.) Go On A Segway Tour

Another exciting thing to do while visiting Sacramento is to participate in the Segway tour. There are two Segway tours available in Sacramento.

Reservations are required and prior to commencing a tour, a safety training is required.

This will not be part of the glide time. The tour will be guided, helmets and reflective vests are provided.

There is also a polo option, trainings for that are provided as well.

The two Segway companies are Segway Polo and Liberty Segway.

6. California State Indian Museum

The California State Indian Museum provides historical insights and visualizations to the Indian culture and stories of times past.

The spirit and nature of the California Indian culture are the major reoccurring theme in this museum.

It has a section where visitors can feel and use Indian tools from this era.

Answer: At the California State Indian Museum, tools such as pump drills, which are used for making holes in shell beads are on display. You can also find mortars and pestles, which are used for grinding acorns.

There are several natural hot/warm springs scattered around the Sacramento region.

If you like the idea of immersing yourself in warm mineral enriched spring water, then visiting a spring or two should be part of your trip’s itinerary.

It is said that dipping yourself in a hot spring can boost your immunity as well as improve circulation, who wouldn’t want that?

8. California Automobile Museum

A collection of classic and vintage cars is always going to make for an interesting sightseeing. At the California Automobile Museum, you will see more than a few of these cars.

The retinue of cars are very impressive, it promises to meet your car enthusiasm, no matter which automobile era you are most interested in.

They have very recent cars that may have sold in the millions of numbers and the lower production count makes and models.

You are welcome to join the frequent tours that go on or saunter off on your own and explore.

Question: When is the California Automobile Museum Open?

Answer: They are usually open between 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM on Wednesdays through Monday.

Question: Do they offer free rides while in the museum?

Answer:  Yes, you can enjoy a free ride every third Sunday, provided you have a paid museum pass. You will also have the chance to choose which car the ride will be in; there are a lot of options. Note – the older generation vehicles are not compatible with baby car seats. So, if you are at the museum with a kid that requires a car seat, be sure to let them know, when choosing a car to tour in.


9. Explore The Sierra Nevada Mountains

The Sierra Nevada Mountain range is a cluster of mountainous terrains located mostly in California.

There are various notable features in the Sierra Nevada, in fact, the largest fresh water Alpine Lake in North America, “The Lake Tahoe” is located here.

The Yosemite National Park is another very notable feature that is found in this range of mountainous terrains.

A lot of activities can be done in both of these places that I have just highlighted. From fishing to biking, from hiking to swimming on the lakes.


10. B Street Theatre

The B Street Theatre (The Sofia) is another place to visit while you are in the Greater Sacramento area. They usually have great shows and a diverse stack of entertainment. The have recently moved into the new building with state-of-the-art amenities.

The sound system is excellent, so you do not have to worry so much about where you sit in any of the theatre viewing rooms.

Another reason why I like the B Street Theatre is because of their commitment to community outreach.

Part of the money they generate from ticket sales and almost all the money they receive from donations, they channel them towards these worthy causes.

11. Row a Boat or Kayak To Explore The Delta

The Sacramento – San Joaquin Delta is another fun place to visit while here. You could rent a boat or a kayak and explore the delta.

The experience is very enjoyable, you will see various species of birds as well as turtles.

There are also blackberry bushes around and visitors are always eager to pack a few pounds.

There are quite a few kayak rental outlets that service the delta, one of the more prominent ones is Delta Kayak rentals also known as Kokopelli kayak rentals. The have kayaks, life vests and paddles that are in great condition.

12. Explore The Wine Vines In The Area

The major wine growing regions in the Sacramento area are in the Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley. The terrain and soil peculiarity in this area provide fertile grounds for a wide variety of wine fruits/grapes to be grown.

13. Attend A Sports Game

Sacramento has a notable and loyal sporting fanbase. There is usually a sporting activity going on in the city and you will have one or more to choose from.

Depending on the time of the year of your visit, you can choose to go watch a basketball game at the Golden 1 Center, home of the Sacramento Kings or go watch the Sacramento Republic FC Soccer game.
